As you may recall, we have written several blogs about Nrf2 and why we believe that the dyfunction, gene variants, or dysregulation are important to the impact of a number of environmental illnesses. As we have discussed previously Nrf2 is a major gene promoter who actions are responsible for the coding of any number of phase 2 antioxidant genes and some of those for phase 1. Another study has provided evidence of the role that Nrf2 plays and again, one can look at it as having a relationship to environmental illness.
In the most recent study, researchers examined the protective role that Nrf2 plays in traumatic brain injury-induced secondary injury. According to the report, the absence of Nrf2 (as in -/- Nrf2 mice) resulted in exacerbated brain injury including those of inflammatory cytokines, neurological deficit and brain swelling and decreased activitation of protective antioxidants. The findings of this study provide supportive evidence that Nrf2 plays a protective role in TBI- secondary injury possibly by regulating production of detoxificationand antioxidant enzymes and inflammatory cytokines. More recent finding show a protective role in dopamine toxicity but the information as of yet is not available. To read the rest of the abstract….
